MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICES AND DAY CAMPS

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH DAY CAMPS $500

Math - 6, 7, and 8th Grade Course Descriptions:

Each Math camp for Middle school is for building, solidifying, and finally mastering the concepts as outlined for that grade level via the California Standards.

Grade 6 instructional time focuses on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing an understanding of statistical thinking.

Grade 7 instructional time focuses on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Grade 8 instructional time focuses on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE DAY CAMPS $550

EARTH SCIENCE - 6th Grade (or high 5th graders)

Earth Science is a branch of science dealing with the physical and chemical constitution of the Earth and its atmosphere. It includes all fields of natural science related to the planet Earth. In this 6th grade, Earth Science class students will learn about the fundamentals of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. Students will also learn how scientists do research in these fields to discover past and future events.

LIFE SCIENCE - 7th Grade (or high 6th graders)

This course will introduce middle school students to the discipline of Life Science.  We will investigate the various topics that are important in understanding the fundamentals of Biology.  It will be a general introduction to what differentiates living from non-living organisms, plants vs. animals from a cellular level up to the final whole organism.  We will delve into some topics such as biomes, biodiversity, adaptability, and inheritance to comprehend how animals and plants interrelate and compete for the success of their existence.   This course will conclude the year with the study of the Human Body and we will be studying anatomy and learn how the body functions.  We will also cover the benefits of making healthy choices to live a healthy lifestyle.  The material will be disseminated primarily in an interactive lecture format, and for reinforcement, there will be homework assignments and videos to better visualize the fascinating study of life!

PHYSICAL SCIENCE- 8th Grade (or high 7th graders)

This class is a standard and laboratory-based program. Students spend approximately forty percent (40%) of their class time on hands-on activities. Introductory principles of physical science and astronomy will be explored in detail, with some related topics from Earth and life sciences included. Constructivist methods of teaching are employed to ensure the best possible comprehension and retention of science concepts. Science activities will be based on the California Science Standards as delineated in the California Science Framework and will utilize the skills and techniques outlined in the Investigation and Experimentation Strand of the Content Standards.

THE GREAT AMERICAN STORY  - (6th-8th Grades)

This course is designed to teach students both a basic factual chronology of American history, but also how to think like historians in analyzing events of the past through documents and other primary sources.
